I know what you're thinking: I know Janiss wrote about my band! I was there, talking to her! I saw the story in [name the magazine, newspaper, or weekly rag here]. So why hasn't she uploaded it to her website?
There are a number of reasons why my story on your band isn't on the site. In fact, let me count them, one by one:
- I haven't uploaded it yet.
You may have noticed that these stories are entered by hand, and are not fuzzy scans from some hundred dollar contraption I got used on eBay. Right now, I'm typing these stories in myself — not even pawning it off on an assistant or an intern. This takes time. And fortitude (seriously, doing this is a pain). So it's possible that I haven't gotten around to your band yet. If my story on your band meets with my semi-strict criteria, then it will eventually wind up on my website.
- It's still in print somewhere.
Some of the magazines I wrote for, like Entertainment Weekly, are still around and your story is somewhere in their archives. In fact, you can find articles by me in Entertainment Weekly by doing a search on my name. My writing for the L.A. Times isn't as accessible — you have to pay to see their archives — but it's still there. I don't know how to find my L.A. Weekly writing, but the paper is still alive and well, so I assume my stuff is floating around somewhere. The bottom line is that I'm mainly republishing articles from magazines and papers that no longer exist. If the publication I wrote for is still around and you want that story, go to them and ask to dip into their archives.
- I didn't think the article was very well written.
Trust me, this is purely a reflection on my writing and not on your band. In fact, I wrote so-so articles on quite a few bands I really liked a bunch! I'm putting up articles here that tell some sort of story and are entertaining to re-read again after all these years. If the story I wrote about your band was just a Q&A, or all we did was a standard piece about your then-current album — in other words, nothing creatively challenging for me and nothing that seems all that enlightening after the fact — then you probably won't see it republished here.
- Your band sucked and I'm embarrassed to have written about you.
Just kidding! But now I bet you're feeling a bit paranoid. I do have an evil streak.
